If you wish to sponsor a spouse, a common-law, a conjugal partner or another eligible family member to Canada, or if you are getting married or separating we can help you! We can also assist you in the preparation of Last Wills and Testaments, Trusts, Living Wills and Powers of Attorney. Our Toronto family lawyer can assist you in making cohabitation agreements, marriage contracts, foreign divorce opinion letters, uncontested divorces and separation agreements. Our firm does not deal with complex financial and contested matters that involve litigation. Our immigration law practice specializes in spousal, common law and family sponsorships for permanent residence, in addition to Canadian citizenship applications, study permits, work permits and express entry applications for permanent residence.
At our sole discretion, we accept a significant number of Pro Bono cases.
How We Help Our Clients – Money Matters
Comprehensive Initial Consultation – ZOOM/FACETIME/SKYPE
Initial Video Consultation Fee (Family or Immigration Law) – $280 + HST.
Please note that we require a notice of cancellation at least 24 hours before the scheduled meeting. If you do not cancel your appointment with at least 24 hours before the scheduled meeting you will be issued an invoice and charged for the entire amount.
We have also modified our business model in light of the lessons learned from COVID-19 crisis and in order to take full advantage of the 21st century technologies. For the foreseeable future ALL client meetings will be conducted via Zoom/Skype/Facetime and any originals or documents requiring signatures should be sent via post/courier. As the situation progresses, we will assess if this remote business model will become permanent, with exceptions made for in-person meetings only in exceptional circumstances.
All our family law and immigration law consultations include a comprehensive meeting with a Toronto family lawyer or a Toronto immigration lawyer, who will provide you with a thorough assessment of your case and personalized legal advice. We will aim to provide you with a strategy, timeliness and creative solutions to your legal matter.
Since our initial meetings are stand-alone, exhaustive and detailed reviews of your legal matter, we do not offer free consultations. For some, but not all immigration legal matters, such as spousal sponsorships, once retained, we deduct the amount of your initial consultation from your overall legal fees.

Installment Payments
Legal fees for most family law services are subject to an hourly rate. We understand that legal costs can be daunting expenditures for many people. We offer interest-free financing options for our clients. In circumstances of exceptional hardship, we may reduce our fees on a sliding scale. Most immigration law matters are conducive to a flat fee. In such cases, we provide competitively priced packages. All prices are subject to Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) of 13%.
IMMIGRATION LAW FEES:
Spousal Sponsorships and Economic Classes Applications for Permanent Residence in Canada:
In order to successfully immigrate to Canada as a spouse, you will need to establish on a balance of probability that your relationship fits into one of the three main categories: married partners (including same-sex partners married any place which legally recognizes same-sex marriages), common law partners (partners of the same or opposite sex who have cohabited for at least one year), conjugal partners (partners of the same or opposite sex who are not married and have not cohabited for one year, but have been in a substantial, interdependent relationship for at least one year).
Each case is unique and requires context-specific evidence in order to satisfy the permanent residency criteria. Working closely with you, our immigration lawyer, Ivan Steele, will prepare your application package for submission and act as a continuing point of contact for the application throughout the processing, until permanent residence decision is made.
Legal fees for most spousal sponsorship applications are in the range of $4700 to $6500. Because of the unique nature of each case, the actual fees depend on the complexity of each matter. The exact amount will be determined following an initial consultation.
Temporary resident permits, such as work permits, study permits and visitor visas are subject to flat rates below:
Visitor Visas to Canada: 1,200 $+ HST and Disbursements per person. Super visas for parents and grandparents: $1,600 (1 parent)
$2,100 (2 parents).
Study Permits (Student Visas) and Work Permits (No LMIA): from $1600 + HST and Disbursements.
FAMILY LAW FEES
Uncontested and Joint Divorces – $780.00 + HST and Disbursements Ontario
In total, Superior Court of Justice fees are $632 to obtain a divorce in Ontario. The first payment of $212 is due when the application for divorce is filed which includes court fees of $202 and $10 that is collected for the federal Department of Justice. Additional court fees of $420 are paid before the divorce is reviewed by the court.
Independent Legal Advice (Marriage Contracts, Separation Agreements, Cohabitation Agreements) – $729.99 + HST.
The flat fee for independent legal advice covers one meeting where our Toronto family lawyer will review your domestic contract, ensure that you understand all of the terms and consequences of the agreement, and he will sign a certificate of independent legal advice. Any additional work is subject to an hourly rate.
Please do not confuse the ILA service with the cost of drafting a marriage contract, cohabitation or a separation agreement – all of which are subject to varying flat rates.

– this service is subject to a flat fee that depends on the complexity of each case. Please call us and we will be happy to give you a quote!
Foreign Divorce Opinion Letters $199.99 + HST.
People divorced outside of Canada may have a more difficult time obtaining an Ontario marriage license. One of the requirements to acquire a marriage license is that a marrying couple must get an opinion from an Ontario lawyer, stating that a foreign divorce would be recognized here. A legal opinion letter from an Ontario lawyer must be addressed to both applicants and must provide reasons as to why the divorce should be recognized in the Province of Ontario. We can finalize this document within 4 hours of receving all of the required information and documentation.
If your situation is not standard and requires further legal research and additional drafting, the cost of obtaining a foreign divorce opinion letter from Ivan Steele is 399.99 + HST.
