Immigration and Family Lawyer in the Heart of Toronto

If you wish to sponsor a spouse, a common-law, a conjugal partner or another eligible family member to Canada, or if you are getting married or separating we can help you! We can also assist you in the preparation of Last Wills and Testaments, Trusts, Living Wills and Powers of Attorney. Our Toronto family lawyer can assist you in making cohabitation agreements, marriage contracts, foreign divorce opinion letters, uncontested divorces and separation agreements. Our firm does not deal with complex financial and contested matters that involve litigation. Our immigration law practice specializes in spousal, common law and family sponsorships for permanent residence, in addition to Canadian citizenship applications, study permits, work permits and express entry applications for permanent residence.

At our sole discretion, we accept a significant umber of Pro Bono cases.

How We Help Our Clients – Money Matters

Comprehensive Initial Consultation – ZOOM/FACETIME/SKYPE

Initial Video Consultation Fee (Family or Immigration Law) – $250 + HST.  In person consultations are subject to a flat fee of $290 plus HST.

Please note that we require a notice of cancellation at least 24 hours before the scheduled meeting. If you do not cancel your appointment with at least 24 hours before the scheduled meeting you will be issued an invoice and charged for the entire amount.

To encourage our clients to cut down on pollution and traffic conditions in Toronto (i.e. driving to appointments, taking up residential parking, we offer an environmental incentive discount of $30), bringing the total for the initial consultations to $250 plus HST.

We have also modified our business model in light of the lessons learned from COVID-19 crisis and in order to take full advantage of the 21st century technologies. For the foreseeable future ALL client meetings will be conducted via Zoom/Skype/Facetime and any originals or documents requiring signatures should be sent via post/courier. As the situation progresses, we will assess if this remote business model will become permanent, with exceptions made for in-person meetings only in exceptional circumstances.

We do not use consultations as a hook to get clients. All our family law and immigration law consultations include a comprehensive meeting with a Toronto family lawyer or a Toronto immigration lawyer, who will provide you with a thorough assessment of your case and personalized legal advice. We will aim to provide you with a strategy, timeliness and creative solutions to your legal matter.

Since our initial meetings are stand-alone, exhaustive and detailed reviews of your legal matter, we do not offer free consultations. For some, but not all immigration legal matters, such as spousal sponsorships, once retained, we deduct the amount of your initial consultation from your overall legal fees. You may wish to contact the Law Society of Upper Canada for a list of lawyers who provide free legal consultations.

Calm clients are good clients! We understand how busy and messy life can get. Working late, taking care of the kids, not in a mood to brave a snowstorm, rush hour traffic or sweltering heat to come and see us? No problem!

By keeping at least some of our clients off the roads, we do not only save them the frustration of dealing with Toronto traffic and parking, but we reduce the number of cars on the road, thereby reducing overall greenhouse gas emissions, fossil fuel consumption, and energy usage. It also helps reduce environmental and human health impacts as a result of decreased air pollution.

Installment Payments

Legal fees for most family law services are subject to an hourly rate. We understand that legal costs can be daunting expenditures for many people. We offer interest-free financing options for our clients. In circumstances of exceptional hardship, we may reduce our fees on a sliding scale. Most immigration law matters are conducive to a flat fee. In such cases, we provide competitively priced packages. All prices are subject to Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) of 13%.

No Trust Deposits

You are billed only for the work already completed. In a radical break from a 19th-century billing model ill-suited to addressing economic inequalities of our present day society, we do NOT require or accept trust deposits in order to work on your case. Instead, we operate on the honour system, whereby you are billed for your matter each month, and you pay for the actual work completed by then. This seismic departure from traditional billing practices is our small way of promoting access to justice and transparency in the legal profession. Through this approach, we wish to ease at least some of the immediate stresses and financial anxiety that a large lump sum payment can add to our clients’ lives during what is already one the most challenging periods in one’s life. In turn, we place our trust in our clients to treat us with the same respect and honour, as they have done since the inception of this law practice.
Ivan Steele Law Office accepts following forms of payment for your convenience: Cash or Money Order, VISA, MasterCard, PayPal, Interac e-transfers and electronic bank transfers.

Spousal Sponsorships and Economic Classes Applications for Permanent Residence in Canada:

In order to successfully immigrate to Canada as a spouse, you will need to establish on a balance of probability that your relationship fits into one of the three main categories: married partners (including same-sex partners married any place which legally recognizes same-sex marriages), common law partners (partners of the same or opposite sex who have cohabited for at least one year), conjugal partners (partners of the same or opposite sex who are not married and have not cohabited for one year, but have been in a substantial, interdependent relationship for at least one year).

Each case is unique and requires context-specific evidence in order to satisfy the permanent residency criteria. Working closely with you, our immigration lawyer, Ivan Steele, will prepare your application package for submission and act as a continuing point of contact for the application throughout the processing, until permanent residence decision is made.

Although we charge a flat fee for spousal sponsorships and most permanent residence applications, because of the unique nature of each case, immigration law fees depend on the complexity of each matter. The exact amount will be determined following an initial consultation.
